The existing house was a warren of dark, stained rooms with little character. A to-the-studs remodel opened the floor plan to create a flowing series of living spaces. The low attic was reclaimed to increase ceiling heights and provide definition to the open space below. The kitchen has an angled ceiling, the living and dining rooms have alternating high and low ceilings. Skylights fill the house with sun at strategic locations. The existing garage door was removed, cut in half, mounted on a barn track and used as a design feature in the new kitchen. This detail acts as an historical reference and helped dictate the finishes as the owners decorated their new home. A new, sunny interior staircase connects the two floors of living. Reused materials, locally fabricated cabinetry and tile are some of the sustainable features of this project.
